3 Common Do-It-Yourself Patio Furniture Repair Tips
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

You don't have to rush to the nearest furniture repair shop whenever your patio furniture set suffers breakage. You can always engage in patio furniture repair yourself. All you need are the right instructions on how to proceed with certain problems.

The first step in repairing patio furniture, of course, is to pinpoint the problem. It all starts from there. You can only fix what you know to be wrong.

Here are 3 patio furniture repair tips for some common problems encountered with patio furniture sets.

1. White-painted surface turning yellow. This is a common occurrence. White-painted surfaces are prone to turning yellow over time. This problem is known as ambering, and it is caused by discoloring due to oxidation, dust accumulation and other factors. Fixing the problem isn't difficult. All you need is to give the tried and tested patio furniture repair formula of paint lifting. Use a paint cleaner and a liquid deglosser to bring back the shininess of the surface. If discoloration has become unmanageable, consider repainting the surface, and this time, finish the job with a good paint sealer to protect the matting.

2. Animal scratches. Since patio furniture will be located outdoors, it is prone to animal scratches. Usual culprits, of course, are cats and dogs. Fixing the same is not difficult. Try to remove the dents with a rubbing compound, or even a polishing compound. This should work if the scratches are not deep, and if you have previously applied varnish on the paint job. Worse comes to worst, you can always try refinishing the surface by removing the scratches with sandpaper and painting it once more. If you never applied a varnish finish the first time around, consider applying one upon refinishing, as this will protect your patio furniture against similar damages in the future.

3. Broken legs. Another famous, or infamous, problem in need of patio furniture repair is broken legs on tables or chairs. However, repair isn't always advised in these cases, given the potential liability. Fixing a broken leg of a furniture piece may lead to potential injury on the part of the person who will use it, if such repair is not properly done. If the furniture's leg is broken, replace the entire leg. Do not attempt to glue or nail the leg together, nor support it with adjacent material. Seek a replacement part from the manufacturer or from a fabrication company, and replace the entire thing.
